Powerman 5000 Powerman 5000
 HFStival, Washington, DC

powerman 5000Even at the early hour (at least by rock n' roll standards!) of 12:50 in the afternoon, RFK stadium was jam packed full of rowdy, half nekkid kids fired up and ready to rock to the campy, sci-fi imagery and hard hitting sounds of POWERMAN 5000. After a stint on Ozzfest a few years back and a couple of subsequent tours with Rob Zombie (whose brother, Spider, is the lead vocalist for Powerman) and a brand new album, Tonight the Stars Revolt!, and hit single "When Worlds Collide" climbing the charts, Powerman 5000 is poised at the brink of superstardom and the heaving, sweaty masses attending the fall episode of HFStival got to see this band on the way up, to say the least.

Taking the stage in matching "space" suits, Powerman set this riotous crowd off from the get go with crunching guitars, funk/hip-hop inflected beats, tasteful use of samples, and enough energy to light up RFK for weeks, that all blend to create Powerman's unique brand of hard rock. Though Spider does occasionally sound a lot like his brother Rob and there are some comparisons to be made with bands like Korn, Coal Chamber, and the like, Powerman 5000 set themselves apart well and have some damn catchy songs to boot. They mixed up songs from their debut and their current disc throughout the set, but the obvious crowd favorite was the current single, "When Worlds Collide" that is tearing it's way through the charts both on the radio waves and on MTV. The crowd went absolutely bananas when the opening chords of this one burst from the gigantic sound system. If you haven't heard of this band yet, mark my words, you will.
